An original pen and ink drawing of an ivy-wrapped tree in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees). Drawn on location in 2024.
Found opposite the Travelodge in Tewkesbury, this tree has lost most of its leaves but is embraced — perhaps trapped — by a thick tangle of ivy. Whether the relationship is loving or parasitic is anyone’s guess, but it’s working for someone.
Equal parts poetic and pointed, Tewkesbury Hugger isn’t just about a tree — it’s about strange partnerships, creeping support, and the quiet power of holding on. The ivy is doing its best, even if it’s also slightly suffocating. Pair that with a scathing sketch of a Travelodge and you’ve got a drawing that’s both beautiful and brutally honest. And yes, the staff were very nice.
Tewkesbury is one of England’s finest medieval market towns, its Norman abbey and ancient timber-framed streets sitting alongside the flood meadows where the Avon and Severn meet. This tree was drawn there on location, in the open air, opposite a budget hotel.
One-of-a-kind. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
