The Blossom Tree — Original Ink Drawing on Hand-Cast Cement Tile

The Blossom Tree is an original ink drawing of a hawthorn at Lodge Hill Cemetery, Birmingham, drawn directly onto a hand-cast cement tile by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees).

When I drew this tree it was covered in pink blossom, with a few bumblebees going about their business. You’ll have to use your imagination. There was something a bit strange about it, all that rebirth, right there among the graves. Lodge Hill is peaceful in a way most of Birmingham isn’t. People move through it quietly, with their own small routines, tidying, pausing, lost in their own thoughts.

Part of an ongoing body of urban and rural tree studies made on location across the UK, this is a one-of-a-kind original — not a print or reproduction. Drawn directly onto hand-cast cement tile using archival black ink, the natural tonal shifts and surface variations of the cement remain visible, ensuring no two tiles are identical.

Framed in a bespoke wooden frame and presented in a custom box, it is ready to collect or give.
