Malvern Hills – Original Ink Drawing on Hand-Cast Cement Tile

An original ink drawing of a tree in the Malvern Hills, its irregular trunk supporting a wonderfully unbalanced arrangement of branches and foliage.

A dense, rounded canopy spreads to one side, while two slender branches reach upwards, carrying smaller clusters of leaves. The unusual arrangement gives the tree an almost sculptural quality, its shape suggesting a history of growth and adaptation to its surroundings.

The drawing is constructed through hundreds of fine, overlapping ink marks, capturing the complicated structure of the foliage while allowing the individual character of the tree to emerge.

Drawn directly onto a hand-cast Portland cement tile, with colour pigments incorporated into the cement mixture, the delicate black ink lines contrast with the weight and solidity of the material. Subtle variations of pale blue and warm cream move across the surface, creating a softly coloured background unique to this particular casting.

Presented in a dark wooden frame, the piece brings together the organic forms of the natural landscape with a material more commonly associated with architecture and construction.
