An original ink drawing of a tree in London Fields, Hackney, its slender trunk supporting a broad, densely tangled canopy of branches and leaves.
The drawing captures the character of the tree through hundreds of delicate, overlapping marks. From a distance, the canopy appears almost solid, but closer inspection reveals a complicated network of individual lines, twisting branches and small spaces between the leaves.
Drawn directly onto a hand-cast Portland cement tile, with colour pigment added to the cement mixture, the fine ink lines contrast with the weight and texture of the material. The pigment creates a subtle colour within the cement itself, while natural variations in the casting process give each surface its own character.
Presented in a dark wooden frame, the drawing brings together the natural, irregular form of the tree with the rigid geometry of the cement tile and its frame.
Part of an ongoing body of work exploring urban trees, the places they inhabit and the relationship between nature and the built environment. Each tree is drawn from observation, recording a particular place and moment in time.
This is a one-of-a-kind original artwork, not a print or reproduction.
