You’ll find this old Hawthorn at the entrance of Halesowen Golf Club. The tree is steeped in myth and meaning. In Celtic lore, the hawthorn is tied to sex, death, and fear – a fairly decent weekend in my twenties. These days, I prefer the associations with healing, beauty, and hope.

Fairies are said to dwell beneath Hawthorns, ready to whisk away unsuspecting sleepers. Sadly, I didn’t spot any fairies that day – just golfers working on their swings and a fox that looked as confused as I did.

Drawn in black ink on location, this piece is part of a collection exploring the personality and symbolism of trees in public space.
