An original pen and ink drawing of a weeping tree in the Victorian gardens of Elvaston Castle, Derbyshire, by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees). Drawn on location in 2024.
Discovered somewhere between a long walk and a shortcut, this tree was found alone in the walled garden, symmetrical, striking, and standing with the elegance of something that doesn’t need an audience to shine. Elvaston Castle is a Gothic Revival estate commissioned by the 4th Earl of Harrington, its gardens designed as a private and secluded oasis of great beauty. The place has a quietly somber edge to it, but is remarkably beautiful, especially on the old stone benches with good company and the sun on your face.
Drawn in lightfast ink, it captures a stillness that’s both natural and composed, like it knows how it looks, but isn’t showing off. Some trees just have it. Derbyshire Beauty isn’t trying hard; it’s just being.
One-of-a-kind. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
