There are times when the world feels heavy, when the promise of spring is eclipsed by the darkness of the season. I drew this tree on one of those days. The kind of day when winter clings on, the paths are slick, and the sky presses down with a cold certainty.
This tree, found in a quiet spot, had clearly been through a struggle. Its roots half-exposed, its trunk leaning as if resisting collapse, but still, somehow, standing. Like the rest of us, waiting.
I suppose that’s what this piece is really about, persistence in the face of uncertainty. The slow, stubborn defiance of nature. And the quiet reminder that the daffodils will rise again.
Drawn on location in black ink, this one-off original work is part of my ongoing series capturing trees as quiet witnesses to the shifting moods of place and season.
