An original pen and ink drawing of a tree at Stanpit Marsh Nature Reserve, Dorset, by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees). Drawn on location on 17 February 2024.
There are times when the world feels heavy — when the promise of spring is eclipsed by the darkness of the season. This tree was drawn on one of those days. Found in a quiet spot at Stanpit Marsh, it had clearly been through a struggle. Its roots half-exposed, its trunk leaning as if resisting collapse, but still, somehow, standing. Like the rest of us, waiting.
Stanpit Marsh is a Site of Special Scientific Interest on the edge of Christchurch Harbour in Dorset — an ancient wetland landscape of reed beds, saltmarsh, and old growth. This tree was drawn there on location in winter, when the form of a tree is most fully revealed.
This piece is about persistence in the face of uncertainty. The slow, stubborn defiance of nature. And the quiet reminder that the daffodils will rise again.
One-of-a-kind. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
