An original pen and ink drawing of a tree in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham, by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees). Drawn on location on 23 April 2024.
There’s always something new tucked away in Cannon Hill Park. I found this tree at the very back, growing a bit like it’s been styled by a hairdresser with a sense of humour. Taut and tidy on one side, dramatically drooping on the other — like a Flock of Seagulls haircut. When I first saw it, spring had barely started, but it was already sprinting ahead of the others. By now, it probably looks like Cousin It.
Every time I come to this park I notice something I hadn’t seen before. Either it’s slowly growing behind my back or I’m just getting less observant. Probably both. Still, it’s always a pleasure to be surprised.
Drawn on location in black ink, this one-off work captures a quiet moment of curiosity and surprise. Part of an ongoing series of tree drawings that reflect on urban green spaces as sites of memory, humour, and quiet resilience.
One-of-a-kind. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
