An original ink drawing of a tree in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham, its leaning trunk supporting a wonderfully irregular canopy of twisting branches and delicate foliage.
The drawing captures the character of the tree through hundreds of small, overlapping marks. Its trunk leans noticeably to one side, while the branches spread outwards and upwards, creating a complicated network of leaves and open spaces. The result is a tree that appears both delicate and resilient, shaped by its surroundings and the passage of time.
Drawn directly onto a hand-cast Portland cement tile, with colour pigments added to the cement mixture, the fine black ink lines contrast with the weight and solidity of the material. Subtle washes of warm orange and pale blue emerge naturally across the surface, creating a softly coloured background unique to this particular casting.
Presented in a dark wooden frame, the drawing brings together the organic, irregular form of the tree with the rigid geometry of the cement tile.
Part of an ongoing body of work exploring urban trees, the places they inhabit and the relationship between nature and the built environment. Each drawing records a particular tree in a particular place, celebrating the individual character often overlooked within familiar landscapes.
This is a one-of-a-kind original artwork, not a print or reproduction.
