After Austin — Original Ink Drawing on Hand-Cast Cement Tile

After Austin is an original ink drawing of a tree on the site of the former Longbridge car factory, Birmingham, drawn directly onto a hand-cast cement tile by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees).

Longbridge was home to Austin, and later British Leyland and Rover, for the better part of a century. The factory closed in 2005. This tree was drawn on the site of it, on ground that was once one of the largest car manufacturing plants in the world. Nature doesn’t make much of that.

The tile is pigmented in two tones — the natural grey of the hand-cast cement and a wash of blue — giving the surface a quality that feels somewhere between sky and concrete.

Part of an ongoing body of urban and rural tree studies made on location across the UK, this is a one-of-a-kind original — not a print or reproduction. Drawn directly onto hand-cast cement tile using archival black ink, the natural tonal shifts and surface variations of the cement remain visible, ensuring no two tiles are identical.

Framed in a bespoke wooden frame and presented in a custom box, it is ready to collect or give.
