An original hand-printed cyanotype of a weeping silver birch at Highcliffe Castle, Dorset, by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees).
The tree was first drawn in ink, then exposed using sunlight onto heavyweight 300gsm watercolour paper — the cyanotype process rendering it in deep Prussian blue, its draped spring foliage emerging in fine white line against the characteristic blue ground. Found just opposite Highcliffe Castle on the Dorset coast, this particular birch has fully matured beside a classic 1970s purpose-built block — a quiet, unhurried presence in an uncompromising setting.
Cyanotype is one of the oldest photographic printing processes, developed in the 1840s and prized for its distinctive Prussian blue tones and handmade quality. Each print is made individually using traditional techniques — slight variations in tone, brushstroke, and edge are part of the process and make every piece entirely unique. No two are ever the same.
