Tangled Canopy is an original ink drawing of a tree on Lickey Hills, Birmingham, drawn directly onto a hand-cast cement tile by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees).
The tree is all energy and structure — a dense, looping canopy built from concentrated line, the trunk finely articulated beneath. Each mark builds into the next, creating a tension between movement and control that the weight of the cement quietly anchors. The Lickey Hills are one of Birmingham’s most cherished open spaces, a ridge of woodland and heath on the city’s southern edge, and this tree was drawn there on location, in the open air.
Part of an ongoing body of tree studies made on location across Birmingham and the UK, this is a one-of-a-kind original — not a print or reproduction. Drawn directly onto hand-cast cement tile using archival black ink, the natural tonal shifts and surface variations of the cement remain visible, ensuring no two tiles are identical.
Framed in a bespoke wooden frame and presented in a custom box, it is ready to collect or give.
