The Outcast is an original ink drawing of a weeping willow near the entrance of the National Memorial Arboretum, Staffordshire, drawn directly onto a hand-cast cement tile by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees).
Found loitering outside the main grounds, this tree didn’t make it in. Maybe it went missing in action, awol, unable to follow orders. Not known to many, remembered by even fewer. The rest of the trees inside are neatly trimmed, each assigned a plaque to a fallen service member or operation. Even a non-nationalistic person finds this place beautiful, somber and peaceful.
Part of an ongoing body of urban and rural tree studies made on location across the UK, this is a one-of-a-kind original — not a print or reproduction. Drawn directly onto hand-cast cement tile using archival black ink, the natural tonal shifts and surface variations of the cement remain visible, ensuring no two tiles are identical.
Framed in a bespoke wooden frame and presented in a custom box, it is ready to collect or give.
