An original ink drawing of a tree in Brockenhurst, New Forest, drawn across a grid of hand-cast cement tiles by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees).
Drawn on location while walking through the New Forest in midwinter, this tree stood out for holding onto its leaves while the surrounding, more mature trees were bare — as if sheltered by them from the worst of the season. Whether that protection is real or imagined, the drawing became a quiet reflection on resilience, patience, and standing slightly apart.
Brockenhurst is one of the New Forest’s most characterful villages, surrounded by open heathland, ancient woodland, and the free-roaming ponies and cattle that define this ancient landscape. This tree was drawn there on location in winter, when form is most fully revealed.
The image is hand-drawn in black ink directly onto individual cement tiles, arranged to form the complete composition. The drawing flows across the joins, creating a fragmented yet unified image that shifts slightly depending on how it is viewed. The natural variation in tone, texture, and surface marks across the tiles gives the piece a subtle sense of age and material presence that contrasts with the delicacy of the drawing.
One-of-a-kind original — not a print or reproduction.
