An original handmade cyanotype inspired by a pollarded tree in Moseley Park and Pool, Birmingham.
This artwork began as a reference photograph taken during one of my walks. I regularly photograph trees while exploring parks and woodlands as visual references for future drawings. Occasionally, an image possesses a character that naturally lends itself to the cyanotype process.
Reduced to its essential form through years of careful pollarding, the tree stands with a striking sculptural presence against the surrounding landscape. The traditional cyanotype process transforms the original photograph into a one-of-a-kind artwork, where rich Prussian blue tones and hand-coated textures celebrate both the individuality of the tree and the handmade nature of the process.
Each cyanotype is individually hand-coated, exposed using a UV light source and carefully developed by hand. Brush marks, soft edges and subtle tonal variations are an intrinsic part of the process, ensuring every artwork is entirely unique.
