Lickey Hills Pines – Original Handmade Cyanotype

An original handmade cyanotype inspired by a small group of pine trees on the Lickey Hills in Worcestershire.

This artwork began as a reference photograph taken during one of my early morning walks. I regularly photograph trees while exploring the landscape as visual references for future drawings. Occasionally, an image possesses a quiet atmosphere that lends itself naturally to the cyanotype process.

Captured on a foggy morning, these pines stand together as the mist softens the surrounding landscape. The traditional cyanotype process transforms the original photograph into a one-of-a-kind artwork, where rich Prussian blue tones and hand-coated textures echo the calm and stillness of the morning.

Each cyanotype is individually hand-coated, exposed using a UV light source and carefully developed by hand. Brush marks, soft edges and subtle variations in tone are an inherent part of the process, ensuring every artwork is entirely unique.
