An original ink drawing of an ivy-clad English oak at Birtsmorton Court, near the Malvern Hills, Worcestershire, drawn across twelve hand-cast cement tiles by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees).
The tree was found on the grounds of Birtsmorton Court — a medieval moated manor house in the shadow of the Malvern Hills. Once battered by time, it now supports climbing ivy and a few spindly new branches: a quiet metaphor for perseverance. Each of the twelve tiles is individually poured, tinted, and arranged to form a striking patchwork — a modern fresco of nature in slow motion.
The drawing is done by hand in archival pigment ink directly onto the sealed cement surface, allowing the natural texture and tonal variation of the cement to complement the organic subject. No two tiles are identical — the material carries its own history. At 36 × 48cm the work makes a bold, contemplative centrepiece for any space.
Part of an ongoing body of large-scale cement tile works by Warren Garland, this is a one-of-a-kind original — not a print or reproduction.
