Hackney Marshes Tree – Framed Original Handmade Cyanotype

An original handmade cyanotype inspired by a solitary tree on Hackney Marshes.

This artwork began as a reference photograph taken during one of my walks. I regularly photograph trees as visual notes for future drawings, but occasionally an image has a presence of its own and finds its way into another part of my practice.

Standing alone in the open landscape of Hackney Marshes, the tree caught my attention for its simple, rounded form and quiet isolation. Through the cyanotype process, the original photograph is reduced to soft Prussian blue tones, giving the tree an almost drawn quality.

Each cyanotype is individually hand-coated, exposed using a UV light source and carefully developed by hand. Brush marks, soft edges and subtle variations in tone are part of the process, making this a completely unique, one-of-a-kind artwork.
