An original pen and ink drawing of the parasol tree outside the Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens, by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees). Drawn on location on 31 October 2024.
There are so many beautiful trees along the streets of Athens that it would be impossible to draw them all. This one stands just outside the Museum of Cycladic Art in the Kolonaki neighbourhood — I didn’t make it inside, the place closes at 5pm, but it was worth the trip just to discover this parasol-shaped tree offering a bit of shelter from the Athenian sun.
I’d say it might offer protection from rain too, but after numerous visits in every season I’ve never seen a single drop fall in this city. There’s a rumour I once heard in an Exarcheion bar about a downpour in the winter of ’78, but I suspect that was more cigarette smoke and Mythos-fuelled myth than memory.
Drawn on location in black ink, this one-off work captures a quiet moment of wandering and observation — part of an ongoing series exploring trees as companions, markers, and memory holders in urban space.
One-of-a-kind. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
