An original ink drawing of a tree near the National Archaeological Museum, Athens, drawn directly onto a hand-cast cement tile by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees).
The tree grows in a hard, urban setting, its trunk twisted and scarred, shaped as much by human interference as by time. It stood out not for its beauty alone, but for its persistence — continuing to grow in a place that feels at odds with nature. Athens is full of trees like this: ancient, stubborn, quietly magnificent amid the concrete and noise.
The drawing is made directly onto the cement tile surface using black ink. The cement carries its own quiet history — subtle tonal shifts, small imperfections, and marks that speak to the material’s industrial origins. Rather than being disguised, these qualities are allowed to remain visible, becoming part of the finished work. The contrast between the delicacy of the line and the solidity of the cement reflects the tension between fragility and endurance that runs through much of this practice.
Presented in a solid wooden frame, giving the piece weight and presence while keeping focus on the drawing itself. One-of-a-kind original — not a print or reproduction.
