An original hand-printed positive cyanotype of a parasol tree outside the Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens, by Birmingham artist Warren Garland (Warren Drawing Trees).
The tree stands on the street outside the museum, its wide canopy spreading like a parasol — offering shelter and a little respite from the harsh Athenian sun. It was discovered on a visit that ended at the door at 17:00, but the tree alone made the trip worthwhile. In this positive version the trunk and canopy emerge in deep indigo on a pale background, giving the piece a brighter, more sculptural feel — like it’s just been lit from within.
The Museum of Cycladic Art sits in the Kolonaki neighbourhood of central Athens, one of the city’s most culturally significant areas. This tree was drawn on location outside its entrance.
Made using traditional cyanotype techniques, light-sensitive paper exposed to sunlight and developed in water. No two are identical — every one catches subtle differences in tone, texture, and brushstroke. One-of-a-kind.
This print is part of a pair — the companion negative version is also available.
