Small groups of leaves hang from the ends, giving the whole tree a slightly tired, almost melancholy appearance.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI drew the tree in black archival pigment ink before taking the image across three individual hand-cast cement tiles.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe arrangement of the tiles loosely follows the movement of the tree. The trunk rises through the narrow central tiles while one section of the drawing moves onto the larger grey tile beside it.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEach tile was individually poured, dried and arranged in my studio in Birmingham before the drawing was made across the complete surface.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe changing greys and off-whites of the cement become part of the image. The tree is still there, still growing, but another plant has slowly taken over its surface. They appear to make a space around themselves. A narrow trunk supporting this huge curtain of branches, almost as if the entire weight of the tree was hanging down from above.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI drew the tree in black archival pigment ink before taking the image across three individual hand-cast cement tiles.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe drawing moves through the joins between the tiles, while the different grey and off-white cement surfaces break up the canopy. It stood amongst the concrete and noise of the city, its trunk thin, twisted and marked by years of growing in a difficult space.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat caught my attention was the top of the tree.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe trunk rises almost awkwardly before bending into a strange, damaged crown. It isn’t a conventionally beautiful tree, but these are often the trees I find myself stopping for.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI drew the tree in black archival pigment ink directly onto a hand-cast cement tile.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe grey cement surface becomes part of the drawing. Natural marks, changes in tone and small imperfections remain visible beneath the ink, giving the tree a surface very different from a drawing on paper.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tile was individually poured and dried in my Birmingham studio before the drawing was made.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePresented in a handmade solid wood frame, the result is a one-of-a-kind original drawing and sculptural wall piece.
